Cookies - New EU law and this Website

A cookie, also known as an HTTP cookie, web cookie, or browser cookie, is usually a small piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user's web browser while a user is browsing a website. (Wikipaedia). It may also be stored as a file on the user's hard disk.

Under new EU data protection laws, websites must tell users that they are using cookies and obtain their consent to do so. At the time of writing there remains considerable confusion about what this should mean.

Email glitch 12th Nov 2011

Apologies to anyone who received duplicate copies of the STP and PTP curriculum messages today. A software "improvement" happened which I had to reverse.

Modernising Scientific Careers

Modernising Scientific Careers is a DoH programme led by the Chief Scientific Officer of the DoH to overhaul the career structure of all the scientists in the NHS. The original information page has been archived and there is no longer a single jumping off point for further information. Searching www.gov.uk produces several documents of interest.

An NHS Network has been set up which will host all published MSC curricula . This Network is an open network that anyone can view, no membership or passwords needed.

Currently the 5 PTP curricula are available and PTP Training Manuals and STPs will follow shortly.

Synergy Users Group

Dear Colleagues

I have at various times tried to persuade the several commercial owners of the Synergy EMG / EP / IOM machine to set up a discussion forum so that we can share problems. This has not happened.

Coming back on the train from Bristol last week, Arup seemed interested in this idea - so I have hosted it as a start. I am willing to let any doctor or CNP in , as well as employees of Carefusion. It will be a private forum to start with, so other manufacturers cannot "spy" on it.

Association of Trainees in Clinical Neurophysiology

Membership of the ATCN is open to all UK Clinical Neurophysiology Trainees and is free.

Because of the small number of Clinical Neurophysiology trainees there are no regional Calman days. As such we meet at three national training days each year that always occur the day before the British Society For Clinical Neurophysiology (BSCN) scientific meeting.

Data Security Standards for EMG and EEG Recording Machines in transit

There is a risk to data confidentiality when recording machines are exchanged between hospital departments and manufacturers. This has been known about in the corporate IT world for years, but it is perhaps not so familiar in our world. I hope to use this forum to develop a common approach to this problem between clinicians and our equipment manufacturers. With the focus on service quality coming soon to the NHS this is an area for which we need agreed standards.

Problems still arise with many types of data according to a recent survey which was also reported in the national press.

Update of Group software

The software that runs the groups and forums is written by a different team to that which writes the software for the email notifications - and they do not always work together.

Today I have upgraded to new versions of each. They are still not perfect but are an improvement on what went before. I have reset the notifications to "1 hour" interval. I think you will find this works best but please feel free to change to something less frequent.
